Melting Pot AI : The AI Against AI for Human Artists
To all artists, creators, and their admirers, as well as everyone around the world with human compassion:
Let’s reset and rebuild generative AI, ensuring fair distribution of ownership to deserving artists worldwide. Artist-owned AI can become the first “problem-free” AI in human history.
Now is the critical moment. We must act to protect artist sovereignty against AI encroachment. If we fail, AI companies might exploit artists’ work through “fair use” claims, taking their creations without permission for free forever.
Generative AI is infringing on the rights of artists.
Artists who cannot make a living from their work alone are having their jobs taken away by generative AI, and artists with clear patterns in their art can now have their work homaged with just a few lines of prompts. If generative AI continues to develop at this rate, the only artists who will survive are legendary and top-tier artists with no patterns in their works and who can survive on their name value alone.
Ironically, the raw material for generative AI is the work of artists. Not just one or two works, but almost all of our creative activities around the world. We artists are being deprived of our rights by what generative AI makes of, which is our second derivative.
If we had sold our work for its true value, this would not problem at all. However, the generative AI companies that we enjoy using today have downloaded or captured, without any notices or permissions, our work from our portfolio sites, Pinterest, and various image and artist site posts. A very small number of them were purchased; however, at a value of about $0.01 per work. It’s also ironic how Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, advocates for a basic income. Perhaps artists are the ones who need a basic income the most.
Large generative AI companies are claiming ‘fair use’.
Here, fair use refers to the use of copyrighted data without permission, as long as it is for a public interest purpose, does not generate revenue, and does not infringe on the rights of the copyright holder. However, large generative AI companies are already generating revenue, and in a broad sense, have started to infringe on the rights of copyright holders, and this infringement is sure to increase in the future.
In this situation, we have come up with two answers to the question of the right direction of AI:
- We will foster the community and administration in creating meaningful law cases that will prevent the rulings of large generative AI companies to attain ‘fair use’ for their copyright infringement.
- Artists who contribute to generative AI training should own a fair stake in generative AI.
We have developed a system that can solve these two problems.
The name of the project is ‘Melting Pot AI’ (Meltingpot.cc). It means AI that is made by melting down the works of artists from around the world.
Although we don’t understand why this issue has not been brought up on a wider scale yet, there is currently a movement towards implementing generative AI copyright law in the world. However, it is fragmented by country and by field. We will first carry out practical PR and administrative activities to create a community for activities toward legislation of AI copyright law.
Melting Pot AI has two functions to fight against Large AI firms. Community and Transaparancy.
Firstly, our service includes a global AI copyright community and diversified bulletin boards for each country. Most importantly, we provide original data backtracking technology for AI, which identifies which artworks were referenced and to what extent when AI generation was done. When AI models of Melting Pot AI, jointly developed by global artists, are used for generation and hence charged, the system is designed to return 80% of the net profit to the artists.
We can feel how important this moment is for the artists. If our voices and hearts do not come together, the regulations and history will quietly flow according to the intentions of those who take them away, and our passion for creative activities will become even more difficult to carry out.
As a group of creators and artists, we prepared and developed this project with the utmost sincerity for artists.
Why we create is for ‘expression’, not for ‘money’. When such ‘expression’ is traded in the market, it’s validated as ‘money’. Our ‘expressions’ have shaped our culture and history. We hope that ‘history’ for ‘expression’ will never stop.
We appeal to all creators and those who love those creators, as well as all people around the world with compassion.
If you sympathize with our project, please visit our website and participate in the Melting Pot AI project. If you have an artist you love, please let them know as well.
Recalling Google’s old slogan — “Don’t be evil.”
We will not let AI become evil.
